Live Updates: Trump impeachment could hamper Biden agenda

The earliest the Senate could receive the article of impeachment would be Jan. 19

President Trump's Senate impeachment trial could hamper President-elect Joe Biden's congressional agenda in the first days of his presidency if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi transmits the article to the upper chamber before the inauguration.

"Now, the process continues to the Senate — and I hope they’ll deal with their Constitutional responsibilities on impeachment while also working on the other urgent business of this nation," Biden said in his statement Wednesday after the House impeached Trump.

FAST FACTS

    • Whether or not the impeachment results in a conviction, it marks a historic moment in that no prior U.S. president has been impeached twice.
    • A trial could go on for weeks -- if it takes place at all.

The earliest the Senate could receive the article of impeachment would be Jan. 19, a day before Biden's inauguration, said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
